A Tale Dark & Grimm -Amber Mica 7H2

      This is the “True Story of Hansel and Gretel”, the dark, gory and Grimm version. Travel with Hansel and Gretel as they run away from their own parents and into eight other terrorizing fairy tales.
       All of Hansel and Gretel’s troubles begin when… they get decapitated by their own father. They are afraid that their father may attempt it again, so they set off on a journey to discover a new family.

What I loved about this book was the second narrator would interrupt the story to prepare you for the alarming and terrifying events that were about to occur. I really enjoyed this form of narration because it made me feel involved and apart of the story. It also provided comic relief during gruesome events. The second narrator is funny, sarcastic and speaks to you, the reader, directly. An example would be:
“You see, Hansel and Gretel don’t just show up at the end of the story. They show up. And then they get their heads cut off. Just thought you’d like to know.” (p. 6)
What I would change about the story would be all the challenges are in sets of three. For example, the three hairs on the devil; they repeated the same phrases three times…
While I know this is a key element in fairy and fable tales, I found this repetition very unnecessary and irritating when reading.

If you are into reading about murder, mayhem and adventure;
 this is an excellent choice for you!
